The Battalions

THE ROYAL SCOTS &
KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
(1st Battalion)

The Royal Scots, the oldest Regiment in the line, was founded in 1633 and its 149 Battle Honours begin at Tangier in 1680 continuing right up to the first Gulf war in 1991.

The King's Own Scottish Borderers was founded in 1689 and has a long and glorious history. Men of the KOSB served at Gallipoli, at the Battle of the Somme, at Ypres and in Korea and Iraq. The Regiment previously withstood attempts to merge it with the Royal Scots on return from the Gulf War in 1991.

These two Regiments are to become the Royal Scots/King's Own Scottish Borderers (1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland).

Founded in 1725, the Black Watch was already one of the best-known in the British Army before its controversial recent deployment south of Baghdad to support the United States Forces in Iraq. It also served with distinction during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, leading the way into Basra. Its battle honours include Waterloo, Alexandria and Fontenoy.

It now becomes the Black Watch (3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland). It will be allowed to keep its famous red hackle but will wear the new Regiment's cap badge.

In 1994, the Queen's Own Highlanders and the Gordon Highlanders amalgamated to form The Highlanders. This Regiment is now part of 7 Armoured Brigade.
