Regimental History

16th December 2004, The Royal Regiment of Scotland was formed as a result of the amalgamation of the 6 existing Scottish Regiments.

THE ROYAL SCOTS & KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
(these 2 Regiments were amalgamated)

THE ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIERS

THE BLACK WATCH

THE HIGHLANDERS

THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS

TERRITORIAL ARMY (Scotland)

  Wherever possible, the traditions and routines associated with each of the existing regiments will continue, i.e.

* regimental symbols and artefacts;

* mess property;

* regimental pipe tunes;

* regimental days, events, customs and celebrations;

It is expected that they will continue to be honoured and preserved within each battalion of the new Regiment.

Historical Note:

    Royal Scots Fusiliers (RSF)

  • The Royal Scots Fusiliers, the 21st Foot, were raised in Scotland in 1678 by the 5th Earl of Mar.

    The Highland Light Infantry (HLI)

  • As the first clan Regiment, the 73rd Highlanders were raised in 1777 by John MacKenzie, Lord MacLeod. Their raising was in response to the outbreak of the American War of Independence.

  • In 1786 the Regiment became the 71st Highlanders. They wore the MacKenzie tartan kilt.

  • In 1787 the 74th Highlanders were formed in the City of Glasgow. Their raising was in response to the war in India and the need for more Regiments to be deployed in foreign service.

  • Under the Cardwell reforms of 1881, the 71st and the 74th were amalgamated to become the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry.

  • In 1923 the Regiment became known as the City of Glasgow Regiment.

    The Royal Highland Fusiliers (RHF)

  • On 20 January 1959, the Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st) and the Highland Light Infantry (71st, 73rd and 74th) were amalgamated in Edinburgh and were entitled The Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret’s Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment).

  • In honour of both Regiments, the RHF still wears the HLI’s MacKenzie tartan trews and still wears the Flaming Grenade cap badge of the RSF.
