SCOTLAND's two military bands are to be merged into one as part of the government's defence cuts.
The Highland and Lowland bands will form the new regimental band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The move was trailed at the time that the merger of the Scottish regiments was announced.
The Ministry of Defence said that the total number of bands would be cut from 12 to six.
It had been feared that there would have to be redundancies but the MoD said yesterday that bandsmen would be able to join the remaining bands.
An MoD spokeswoman said that the new Scottish regimental band would wear kilts; currently, the Highland band wears kilts and the Lowland band wears trews.
