Sir,
I notice with great interest that The Royal Scots have invited the public, by way of leaflets and handouts, to "Get up close with Scotland's Finest" and to "Come and meet your Local Regiment" on 11th-13th July, 10.00-18.00hrs at the Meadows, Edinburgh.

This will be a '3-day spectacular' as part of the Army's and the Regiment's recruiting efforts. Having been a Royal Scot for 37 years, I'm sure it will be so.

However, I feel, and I'm sure many will agree with me, that there is something wrong here. There is the opportunity, expressed on the leaflets, "[to] get the chance to find out more about becoming one of Scotland's finest".

That is all well and good, but, if The Royal Scots are the 'first and the finest' (as I agree they are) why are they in the very near future to, literally, be done away with??? They will also cease to be "Your Local Regiment".

Why, on earth, are the Government, MoD and Council of Scottish Colonels so keen to do away with that which is "Professional, the Best, First and Finest"? Just what do Blair, Brown, Hoon, Ingram, Jackson, and all the Scottish Colonels think they are doing?

Of course I am biased towards my own Regiment, but my feelings here in this matter apply to all the infantry regiments, English, Welsh as well as Scottish, that are under the 'Hammer'.

NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT - this means something to me, and many others - MARK my words!
